Twitch Global Emote

'PJ' is Peaceful Jay, a fighting game community streamer whose X bio reads 'TwitchTV Admin, creating a scene for those without one'. In April 2011 Peaceful Jay was 'currently working on my JTV emote design', and two weeks later: 'PJSalt emote works now!!!!!!'. The 'salt' comes from Peaceful Jay's Justin.tv fighting game channel, the Salt Lounge, with shows like 'Super Salt Fighter IV' and 'MAD SALT' grudge matches. In fighting games salt means a player's bitterness after a loss, and #PJSalt was spammed through Evo 2011.

PJSalt outgrew its roots to become Twitch's general 'salt' emote for rage-quits, sore losers and taunts. Twitch adopted it in its own voice: the Apex 2015 'Salty Suite' ('get your PJSalt emotes ready'), 'Make your PJSalt a whole lot saltier' for animated Cheermotes (2017), a Glitch pillow sold as 'The perfect PJSalt antidote', and a spot in its Top Global Emotes of 2017. In 2016 Twitch launched PJSugar as the counterpart: 'Forget Salt. Sometimes you need some #PJSugar.'
