Context
Poooound belongs to JayViper, a longtime Twitch streamer of Call of Duty, GTA and more, whose X bio still reads 'Pooound on Twitch'. It began as an on-stream catchphrase: stream announcements in 2013 ended with 'POOOOUND!', a hype sign-off like 'pound it'. It was a global emote with JayViper's face by 2014, but JayViper wasn't fully happy with it and wrote in 2015 of wanting to 'get rid of Poooound, too & change it'.
In September 2016 JayViper got to replace the image and asked followers whether to 'use the thumbs-up globally? Or keep smexy face?', reasoning: 'Currently Poooound is used 1,200 times a day with some crazy peak of 50K. Thoughts are it'd be a more useful emote with thumbs up'. The new design went through Twitch's approval process and went live on 7 October 2016: 'THE NEW @twitch GLOBAL EMOTE Poooound IS LIVE!!!' The same day JayViper reported it 'already being used 8x more than the previous version. 👊😛 Thanks to @twitch for making the change!'
The redesign turned a personal joke into a general fist bump, and chat now uses it to cheer, agree, congratulate and greet: 'SQUUUAAAAAAD Poooound'.
