Context

ResidentSleeper comes from a streamer falling asleep on stream, and Twitch tells it that way itself. When a viewer wrote 'I fell asleep on stream playing Outlast in #VR. So proud.', Twitch replied 'Essentially the story behind the ResidentSleeper emote!' The face belongs to Ronnie (@OddlerPro): 'I'm a global emoter on Twitch called ResidentSleeper'. Ronnie recalls that a viewer, Wilyrook, 'was the first person to coin the term ResidentSleeper. Everyone had their own term for it before the emote officially came out'. The name joins Resident Evil and 'sleeper', and at TwitchCon 2018 Ronnie posed 'with all the Resident Evil Speed Runners doing ResidentSleeper emote'. It was in chat by October 2012.

In chat it is THE boredom emote, for dull streams, matches, lore dumps or classes: 'It's Lore tim- ResidentSleeper'. Twitch leans into that. It ranked ResidentSleeper among its Top Global Emotes of 2017, TwitchCon asked 'ResidentSleeper or PogChamp?' about a talk on taxes, and Twitch promoted sleepwear with 'For those of you who are ready to take ResidentSleeper to the next level...'.
